Main Street Baptist Church

Main Street Baptist Church was founded in 1881 by Rev. Jacob Jordan, a Smithfield resident and member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, sent by the Emmanuel congregation to organize a church for a group that had been meeting for prayer and study in the Smithfield area. The church was originally named the Second Baptist Church and met in the church located on Hill Street in downtown Smithfield. The congregation moved to its current location on Main Street in 1923. Main Street Baptist Church celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1981 and its name was changed to reflect the new location.
