LUNCH & LEARN: Prisoner of War Camps During World War II

During the Second World War, Virginians watched as German and Italian prisoners invaded the Old Dominion. At least 17,000 Germans and countless Italians lived in over 20 camps across the state and worked on five military installations.

Just across the James River Bridge, POWs were housed at Fort Eustis--the largest concentration of POWs in the state--and at facilities by the James River Bridge. Their labor was important to the war effort, especially at the Port of Embarkation, and in the agricultural fields of Isle of Wight County. Presenters Dr. Kathryn Roe Coker and Jason Wetzel will discuss the daily lives of some of these individuals and have copies of their book available for sale and autograph.
