Most people are only familiar with Virginia Miliary Institute's role at the Battle of New Market, but the Corps of Cadets performed a number of duties throughout the course of the war. This brief lecture explains how VMI came to be a key element of the State's defensive organization and examines the different roles it performed from the war's beginning to its very end.

Our lecturer is Peter Underwood, a Suffolk native, VMI graduate, retired Marine Corps officer, history professor at the U.S. Naval Academy and professor of policy and strategy at the U.S. Naval War College.
